Two Wheels Are Better than Four
Some of your earliest memories are likely to be adventures you had on your bike.Growing up doesn’t have to get in the way of the joy of cycling. In fact, biking to work is a great way to be both a responsible adult and a fun-loving kid at heart.
reThink Your Doubts
If it’s been a while since you’ve been on a bike or think that your car is your only commuting option, you probably have a lot of questions and doubts.Check out the information below to see if biking to work could work for you. You can learn more through our Bicycle and Pedestrian Resources.
“Isn’t it dangerous to ride a bicycle in Central Florida?”
It does not have to be. Cycling can be just as safe as driving a car when the rules of the road are obeyed. Follow local laws and always wear a helmet. Learn more about Florida’s bicycle and pedestrian laws to stay safe.
“I don’t have a special commuting bicycle.”
Any working bicycle will get the job done. A tune-up at the local bike shop will ensure that everything is in working order.
If you become a daily commuter and are interested in a more commute-friendly bicycle, you can use the money you’re not spending on gas, tolls, and maintenance on a bike that suits all of your needs.
“I’m not in shape or fit enough to ride a bike to work.”
Biking to work doesn’t have to be a race. Trying out your route to work on a day off is a great way to see if you are comfortable with the distance – plus, you can kick-start your exercise regimen!
“I won’t have anywhere to park my bike.”
If a standard bike rack is not available at your place of work, a simple conversation with your manager will probably solve the problem.
Many employers allow their employees to bring their bicycles into the office or allow them to store them in a storage room. If you do park your bicycle outside, be sure to use a good quality U-lock.
Asking for better bicycle parking facilities at your worksite is also a great idea. If the property owner and building manager do not know it’s a need, they probably won’t think of it themselves. Make your voice heard – you might be surprised where it could lead!
“It’ll take too long to get to work.”
In urban areas, cycling generally takes less time than driving for trips of three miles or less. It actually takes about the same time for trips of three to five miles.
Doing a “trial run” over the weekend can help determine how much time you’ll need in order to make it to the office on time.
“If I bike to work, I’m going to get all sweaty – this is Central Florida after all!”
Most early morning commutes take place before the temperature gets too high. Remember, commuting is not the same as cycling at the gym – you won’t necessarily need to shower.
If you do work up a sweat, you may be able to work out an agreement with a local gym or health club near your work that has shower facilities. If that is not a possibility, keep a small bag with deodorant and soap at the office for light cleaning up.
Employers and Human Resources departments are always looking for creative ways to make their employees happier. Choosing a smarter commute not only helps you, it helps the community. Your employer may be interested in supporting your efforts by adding shower and changing facilities on-site.
“What if it rains?”
Central Florida is known for its rainy season. The good news is that the rain is somewhat predictable and for short periods of time.
When starting out, always check the forecast and only ride on days that you’re comfortable with the weather. A fender on a bicycle can help avoid water and dirt from spraying on you if the roads are wet. Finally, dress appropriately. Rain jackets come in all different varieties – find one that keeps you dry and cool. In the winter months, dress warmer to accommodate the temperature change.
“How can I dress appropriately for work when riding?”

While it is often possible to bike to work without ruining your outfit, consider keeping several outfits at the office and rotating them out on days when you drive to work.
Also, making sure your bike has a chain guard and fenders are great ways to avoid leaving evidence of your commute on your work clothes.
