Reclaim Your Day

Fun To WalkWalking to work requires no extraordinary equipment, produces no greenhouse emissions, and requires no more fuel than a healthy breakfast.

For an employee working within two miles of their worksite, it doesn’t get much easier!

If you’re paying a monthly gym membership, you may find that the best exercise is the free workout that gets you to and from work each day.

reThink Your Doubts

Trying something new is scary. You probably have a lot of questions and concerns about whether or not this is an option for you.

We’ve compiled a list of common concerns below, including helpful insights that will set you on the right path. You can learn more through our Bicycle and Pedestrian Resources.

“Isn’t it dangerous to try to walk somewhere in Central Florida?”

It does not have to be. Walking can be just as safe as driving a car when the rules of the road are obeyed. Follow local laws and stay alert. Learn more about Florida’s pedestrian laws to stay safe.

“It’ll take too long to get to work.”

If you live less than two miles from work, you may be surprised to find out that driving your car is not any faster than walking to work. When you take into account the time it takes to find parking for your car, there may be little time savings by continuing to drive such a short distance.

Doing a “trial run” on a day off can help determine how much time you’ll need in order to make it to your desk in the morning.

“I’m too out of shape to walk to work.”

Walking to work isn’t about power walking! Set a pace that you’re comfortable with – you may be surprised how quickly your health makes a turn for the better.

“If I walk to work, I’m going to be smelly! It is so HOT out there!”

Most early morning commutes take place before the temperature gets too high. Remember, commuting is not the same as running on a treadmill – you won’t necessarily need to shower.

If you do work up a sweat, you may be able to work out an agreement with a local gym or health club near your work that has shower facilities. If that is not a possibility, keep a small bag with deodorant and soap at the office for light cleaning up.

Employers and Human Resources departments are always looking for creative ways to make their employees happier. Choosing a smarter commute not only helps you, it helps the community. Your employer may be interested in supporting your efforts by adding shower and changing facilities on-site.

Anyone Can Walk

“I work in an office and have to look professional. How can I do that if I walk to work?”

While it is often possible to walk to work without ruining your outfit, consider keeping several outfits at the office and switching them on days that you drive to work.

“What about the late afternoon rain showers?”

This is Central Florida and we’re famous for our rain showers. The good news is that the downpour is somewhat predictable and typically clears up as quickly as it arrived.

When starting out, always check the forecast and only walk on days that work for you. Finally, dress appropriately. Rain jackets come in all different varieties – find one that keeps you dry and cool. In the winter months, dress warmer to accommodate the temperature change.
