Bus service can take on many different forms. From Bus Rapid Transit to flexible routes, public transportation is getting a whole new spin.
Back To TopBus Rapid TransitBus Rapid Transit (BRT) is not your typical bus service. BRT is an innovative public transit solution designed to get riders from point A to point B faster and more efficiently than the traditional bus service.
BRT operates efficiently because the buses typically have travel lanes separated from regular traffic and can control traffic signals. Riding BRT means not worrying about traffic jams – getting to your destination quickly, safely, and with the comfort and ease of not having to drive.
LYNX’ downtown circulator, known as LYMMO, is a local example of BRT. The LYNX LYMMO has dedicated lanes and a signal prioritization system. Everyone rides for free on the LYMMO, which connects the Orlando Centroplex with the Orange County Courthouse and Orlando City Hall.
Back To TopExpress RoutesExpress routes are a great way to connect the places where people live to the places where people work.
Express routes typically start at locations where commuters can safely park their cars for the day, such as one of FDOT’s Park & Ride lots. After a limited number of pick-up points, the express bus heads straight to a major work center. This means that there are not the many starts and stops of regular fixed route transit. Express routes have drop-off locations near worksites, which are also pick-up points for the return trip in the afternoon.
The I-4 Express bus, which is operated through an agreement between FDOT, Votran, and LYNX, is a local example of an express route. Connecting Volusia County to downtown Orlando, the Link 200 departs from the Saxon Park & Ride lot and travels I-4, providing a great alternative to the 30-mile one-way commute.
A great example of express bus service in Central Florida is the Link 204, which connects Lake County to downtown Orlando. In operation since December 2006, the express route starts at the Clermont Park & Ride lot, picks up commuters at a limited number of stops in Clermont, and then takes SR 408 straight to downtown Orlando.
Back To TopFlex BusLike your transit service flexible? Flex bus service has the predictability of a fixed route with specific bus stops, while also being “flexible” about the route in order to pick up passengers who have made prior reservations.
LYNX operates NeighborLink, which is their spin on flex bus service. With NeighborLinks in Poinciana, Ocoee, Oakland, Winter Garden, Bithlo, Oviedo, and Buena Ventura Lakes, this innovation in transit helps connect these communities with LYNX fixed route service.
