First phase of carshare program ends

First phase of carshare program ends

The carshare program in Orlando is evolving as a new vendor is being selected in September, and the current vendor is transitioning out of the program.

In October 2013, reThink and the City of Orlando partnered with Hertz 24/7 to bring carshare to Downtown Orlando. The first phase of the Central Florida Carshare Program included twelve vehicles parked in the Central Business District and as far north as Florida Hospital Orlando. The vehicles were available for hourly rentals, as opposed to the 24-hour rental periods available through traditional car rental services.

In July, Hertz announced its intention to end its carsharing service in the United States. The Central Florida Carshare Program will no longer be available through Hertz 24/7 in Central Florida effective September 12, 2015.

FDOT has advertised a Request for Proposals (RFP) to select a vendor for Phase II of the carshare program. The second phase would include two cars to be placed in the City of Winter Park in the parking lot near the Amtrak and SunRail station. Project managers anticipate that a new vendor will be selected September 14, 2015. Carshare services, along with some modifications, would then be reintroduced in Downtown Orlando and the new Winter Park location later this fall.
