Casselberry Engineer Has Blueprint for Greener Commutes

Jane Dai has been a supporter of reThink Your Commute for several years. She first downloaded the reThink Your Commute app in 2019, using it to find rides and record her trips to earn rewards.

As an engineer, she appreciates the simplicity and efficiency of greener forms of commuting, like taking SunRail, for example. “SunRail really is convenient and less stressful,” Dai said.

As a commuter, she values the chance to relax on a SunRail train and catch up on emails while she rides to work. “I also can read a book on the way home,” she said.

As a number cruncher, she enjoys using the commute calculator on the reThink Your Commute app to see how much money she saves by taking public transit or ridesharing. “And you don’t always think about the wear and tear you save on your car,” Dai said.

As a detailed planner, she likes that she can coordinate with co-worker Kelly Brock, who times his commute to drive by her station at the same time she gets off SunRail. Then they share a short car trip into the office.

And as a savvy consumer, she also likes that the Florida Department of Transportation’s program lets her earn points that are redeemable in gift cards and discounts. To be eligible, she records her commutes via her online reThink Your Commute account, which is free to join. Members also can earn points by walking or biking to work and even by working from home.

During the pandemic, Dai worked from home regularly. “I wasn’t sure I would like it,” said Dai, who is the City Engineer of City of Casselberry. “But it’s great. It gives me flexibility, and it’s easier to focus.”

Her advice to those who are thinking about finding greener ways to get to the office or work from home: “Give it a try,” Dai said. “This is a good time to rethink your commute.”
