Finding Friendship and Financial Savings in a Vanpool

Two sisters found that vanpooling not only lowered their stress, but increased their financial savings – extra money they use to advance their medical careers.

When Cheryl and Shannon Gallegos started vanpooling with their co-workers, the sisters originally hoped to share expenses and driving duties during their 36-mile roundtrip to a medical center in Lake Nona, where they often work 12-hour shifts as registered nurses. But the vanpool grew into something much more during the difficult days of COVID-19 outbreaks and rising gas prices.

“We are blessed to have this group,” said Cheryl about the vanpool offered by LYNX and subsidized by her employer. “It feels like it’s family. We’ve had days when we’ve dealt with death, and we console each other. Not everyone understands what we face each day.”

If someone is running late due to a busy day at the hospital, a member of the group may even pitch in to help with some simple chores like cleaning or straightening up a work area, if possible.

“We’ve all become friends and bonded with each other,” Shannon said. “If someone has a horribly draining day and is scheduled to drive, we’ll switch.”

Sometimes they’ll even share a pizza to decompress after work.

“We talk about our day,” Cheryl said. “It strengthens our friendship. It makes for a stronger connection at work. It’s been amazing. It makes it better for everyone.”

To qualify, vanpoolers must keep detailed records for both LYNX and their employer. But Cheryl – the main record-keeper – said it’s been worth the effort, especially as COVID continues and gas prices rise.

The Gallegos sisters estimated they each save about $2,500 a year in gas, tolls, and vehicle wear and tear. Their savings help fund online college courses needed to become nurse practitioners.

“If you want to save money, if you want to make friends, if you don’t want to pay tolls,” Shannon said. “Look into vanpooling.”
